Berkshire Cafe

The Berkshire Cafe is a firmly embedded cultural tradition in my hometown. It has a lengthy history, capped by new ownership over the past ten years. The present owner has been meticulous in overseeing the entirety of the operation, so at a point I was called upon to craft a web presence. Because of my familiarity with The Berk, as a long-time employee, I felt well suited to shoot photographs, write copy, and assemble the website.

Prior to working on this project, The Berk did not have an official logo for usage. My instruction was to best replicate the graphic that appears in the front window, hand painted back in the 1960s. I photographed it and rendered an adaptation in vector format.

Isolating the Color Palate

The developmental phase of this project required isolating a color palate, for which I turned to a practical design solution: My logic is that an establishment’s website exists as an extension of its brick & mortar location, so the sensory elements may carry a consistency. I took my camera to The Berk on a Saturday morning, before they opened, and photographed interior and exterior surfaces having defining color tones, for use in digital application.
